Hyundai EV & PHEVs Models

When it comes to charging your Hyundai EV or PHEV, the time will largely depend on the size of your car's electric battery and the quality of charging equipment you use.

You must first identify the model to understand how to best charge your car. Hyundai currently has seven commercially available electric vehicles:

EVs:

Hyundai IONIQ 5 (2021) – 58 kWh battery

Hyundai IONIQ Electric (2020) – 38.3 kWh battery

• Hyundai IONIQ Electric (2016) – 30.5 kWh battery

• Hyundai KONA Electric 3KwH (2018) – 39 kWh battery

• Hyundai KONA Electric 6kWH (2018) - 64 kWh

PHEVs:

• Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV (2021) – 13.8 kWh battery

• Hyundai Tucson PHEV (2021) – 13.8 kWh battery

• Hyundai IONIQ PHEV (2017) – 8.9 kWh battery

Hyundai EV & PHEV Charging Cables

When charging your electric Hyundai vehicle, you want to ensure you're using high-quality equipment that will charge your car with maximum efficiency.

Badly made cables can slow down the charging process and even waste energy or damage your vehicle's electric battery, costing you money.

Both Hyundai EVs and PHEVs are compatible with type 2 charging
cables. At Smartly, we offer a range of charging cables such as:

Smartly Type 2 to Type 2 cables

Hyundai EV Home Chargers

Charging your vehicle at home is an excellent way to get the most out of it. It will also save you from relying on more expensive public chargers, and you can save money by charging during off-peak times.

For home charging, we recommend a single-phase charger. Take a look at our:

Easee One

Wallbox Pulsar Max

MyEnergi Zappi

If you are looking for a higher power charger for commercial or industrial use, you can find the full selection by clicking here. We don't recommend three-phase chargers for home usage as most homes won't have the correct three-phase supply to accommodate them.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 (2021) will take an average of:

● 25 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 9 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
● 50 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 50kW rapid charger.
● 30 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 150kW rapid charger.

The Hyundai IONIQ Electric (2020) will take an average of:

● 17 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
● 30 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a rapid charger 50kW or higher.

The Hyundai IONIQ Electric (2016) will take an average of:

● 14 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 5 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 5 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
● 30 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 50kW rapid charger.
● 20 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 150kW rapid charger.

The Hyundai KONA Electric 39 kWh (2018) will take an average of:

● 19 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
● 40 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 50kW rapid charger or higher.

The Hyundai KONA Electric 64 kWh (2018) will take an average of:

● 30 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 18 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 10 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
● 50 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 50kW rapid charger.
● 40 minutes to achieve 80% charge using a 150kW rapid charger.

All Hyundai's fully electric vehicles are compatible with type two charging cables and are capable of rapid public charging. While it is possible to use a three-pin plug for these cars, as you can see from the above, it will take you significantly longer to achieve a full charge than if you were to use high-quality charging cables and a dedicated charging port.
As PHEVs have smaller electric batteries than fully electric vehicles, they are often much quicker to charge. Please note that Hyundai PHEVs are not capable of rapid public charging.

The Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV (2021) will take an average of:

● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 2 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 2 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.

The Hyundai Tucson PHEV (2021) will take an average of:

● 6 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 2 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 2 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.

The Hyundai IONIQ PHEV (2017) will take an average of:

● 4 hours to achieve a full charge using a 3-pin plug.
● 3 hours to achieve a full charge using a 7kW charger.
● 3 hours to achieve a full charge using a 22kW charger.
No, at present only the fully electric models can use public rapid charging, but the PHEVs are not compatible with rapid charging.
